Services
The Marine Cadets of Massachusetts conduct many services within the community. Some of these services are listed below and are conducted during social events, retirement ceremonies, holiday functions, and other events. These services not only provide a professional and amazing touch during the events but also gives the kids involved a feeling of accomplishment and honor.
Services
Neighborhood Clean-Ups
Cadets become involved in cleaning their city or town in one of several ways. The cadet organization can host a cleanup event in an area of the city that appears to be in need of attention or a request by one of the neighborhood assosciations or City Hall is made requesting that our cadets assist them in their efforts to beautify thier neighborhoods and City. Cadets assist in a number of ways; Cadets rake leaves, pick up trash, paint, attempt to repair things that are broken, and spread the word to get more involved.
Community Events
Cadets get invovled with volunteering at community events by providing security (observe and report only) in which they report anything out of the ordinary to their adult chaperone's who then monitor the situation and contact the proper authorities if necessary. Cadets also empty trash, prevent the entrance to unathorized areas to the general public, serve food, set up / break down tables and chairs, or complete other tasks pre authorized by Marine cadet staff. The Marine Cadet organization also hosts public events.
Color Guards
Color guards usually consist of a 4 cadet detail but not less than 3. Cadets wear their Dress Blue uniform and carry the American Flag and Marine Cadet flag flanked by a ceremonial rifle. This is usually used for the opening ceremonies of an event and can be stationary and or marched into place.
Parades
During parades Cadets wear different uniforms. In every parade a Color Guard is used as described above. Instead of being staionary Cadets march the route of the parade. The difference in parade with the Color Guard is the number of Cadets involved. There will always be the American flag and Marine Cadet flag flanked by 2 rifles. In addition to the American flag and Marine Cadet flag there will be either the City Flag, State Flag, Marine Corps Flag, or other flag fitting the occasion.
In addition to the color guard Cadets that are not involved in the color guard conduct duties such as carrying banners, marching behind the color guard, and handing out informational fliers. Our organizations Van is sometimes also incorporated in larger parades for advertisement purposes.
Flag Folding
Not many people know that folding a United States flag is more meaningful than simply folding a piece of fabric. With every fold there is a unique meaning and a ceremonial method of folding the flag. Cadets often perform flag folding ceremonies on board the USS Massachusetts in Fall River in front of hundreds of Boy and Girl Scout groups participating in the overnight camping experience on board the Battleship.
This event can be conducted anywhere and for any purpose as appropriate. Cadets wear their Dress Blue uniform when conducting this ceremony and often include patriotic music to add to the meaning.
Wreath / Flower Tossing / Bell Ringing
Cadets are sometimes requested by the veterans War Council during War Veteran Memorial ceremonies. During these ceremonies Cadets wear their Dress Blues and conduct Color Guard services and offer an escort for family members who lost a love one that throws a wreath or flower off the side of the USS Massachusetts in their memory.
During these ceremonies Cadets usually also ring a bell when appropriate in honor of each of the services members being remembered are named.
Remembrance of US Marines Killed in Action (KIA)
Cadets very seldom conduct this service. This is a very sad service that is not a favorite of our Cadets and Staff. This ceremony is usually conducted within days of a funeral. The ceremony consist of Cadets and members of our staff. Roll call is given at the start of the ceremony listing some of the names of Marines that served with the deceased. The deceased Marines' name will also be called and repeated 3 times. After the 3rd time Taps will be played followed by a flag folding ceremony. Once the flag is folded it is then presented to the spouse or parents of the deceased Marine.
The Flag Folding Ceremony requires 7 Cadets and 2 Staff members in order to be conducted and subjected to availability. The flag presented will need to be supplied by the family or friends of the Marine.
